RUNNERS-UP

My second son was 6 weeks premature when I gave birth on Christmas morning.

After delivering him, I went into cardiac arrest. After more cardiac arrest episodes and seizures, I was drug-induced into a coma. I was only given a 10% chance of survival, with the likelihood that I'd have severe brain damage and need a heart transplant.

Well, two months later, I was released from the hospital without needing a transplant and making a miracle recovery. When I arrived home from the hospital, I came into a Christmas tree-filled room, with unopened presents and my house still decorated.

We ordered pizza (the delivery man thought it was very odd that our tree was still up along with the decorations).

We celebrated Christmas, appreciating everything that we have. It was the most romantic day and night of my life.

I had just broken up a long, bad, relationship and had sworn off men. My girlfriend dragged me to a wine tasting.

The room was crowded and I heard this wonderful laughter. The crowd parted and here was this man, head back, laughing heartily. I poked my friend in the ribs and said, "I'm going to marry that man. Do you know his name?"

I walked up, asked him out, and three dates later we got married. Our 17th anniversary is this Valentine's Day, and I still love him as much as ever.

When I turned fifty, being the shy reserved kind, I did not want a party. All I wanted to do was go to dinner with my sons, their wives and girlfriends, and my husband.

I expected the usual gifts of flowers, candles, etc. But when my husband presented me with a small jewelry box, I was in for the surprise of my life.

Normally he is the type who only shops at hardware stores. He will go out of his way to save a few cents at the grocery store.

Inside this box was a 2-carat diamond ring custom made with four diamonds along the side--for our four sons.

He had gone to jewelry stores all over our city until he found a jeweler who is renowned for his work; he specially designed this ring. More important than the ring was what it meant—coming from my husband, a man who's very thrifty and not prone to extravagance.

I get so many compliments on it and I always tell them about the wonderful man behind it—my husband.
