For most kids, Halloween is all about candy, candy, and more candy.
For other kids, however, Halloween is about the satisfaction of knowing that they're part of a national effort to help children around the world.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is celebrating 60 years of encouraging kids to raise money for a good cause. At the same time, the organization has instilled millions of trick-or-treaters (including many of us reading this!) with a wonderful sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Today, UNICEF uses the Web, and social networking, to engage kids and offer creative ways in which they can participate in Halloween-fun fundraising.
Do you think your kids would your kids and their friends enjoy the satisfaction of helping others on Halloween? Here are some great ways for them to get involved in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF:
Build a Web page: Encourage them to create a UNICEF fundraising web page on which their friends and family can donate money? Once the page is created, they can do an e-mail blast or send out tweets to their Twitter friends. Tip: Your kids can do this individually or, to make it even more fun, do it as a team. Here's how:
Get free fundraising kits: Simply order them online. Each kit includes 10 free boxes. Or, you can pick up the boxes at any Toys "R" Us or Babies "R" Us store across the country. Click here to get kits:
Get teens involved: Most high schools have a Key Club. Each high school Key Club already should have received a fundraising kit from UNICEF that includes the collection boxes and other resources to kick off the campaign. Encourage your tween or and teen to join and get involved this Halloween.
Host a Halloween party: Bob for apples, pin the broom on the witch, and raise money for UNICEF at the same time. How it works: You register your party at the UNICEF website and you'll receive fun invitations and tips for hosting a great party.
Other fundraising ideas suggested by UNICEF include:
- A read-a-thon (kids receive donations according to number of books they read)
- A jump-a-thon (kids receive donations according to how many jumps they jump)
- A candy sale at school (ask supermarkets to donate or discount candy)
