Five-spice appetizer meatballs

Serves 10 people

Ingredients

1 slightly beaten egg white

3/4 cup soft bread crumbs

1/4 tsp. five-spice powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1 lb. ground beef

1-1/2 cups orange juice

3 tbsp. honey

4 tsp. cornstarch

4 tsp. soy sauce

1/4 tsp. ground ginger

1 medium red or green sweet pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine egg white, bread crumbs, five-spice powder, and salt.
  3. Add beef and mix well.
  4. Shape into 48 1-inch meatballs.
  5. Place in a 10x15x1 inch baking pan.
  6. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until no pink remains in the center of the meatballs; Drain.
  7. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, stir together orange juice, honey, cornstarch, soy sauce, and ginger.
  8. Cook and stir until thick and bubbly. Cook and stir for two minutes more.
  9. Add red or green pepper and meatballs to saucepan; cook and stir until heated through.
  10. Serve in a chafing dish; provide guests with toothpicks.
