Cupcakes have spent years as our number one sweet treat. Now, however, pies are often acclaimed as America's trendiest dessert.
Lists of the most popular pies almost always include the following perennial favorites. To delight friends and family members, create one of these "new discoveries" at your next get-together.
Classic apple pie
6 cups apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1/4 cup of sugar
2 Tbs. of flour
3/4 tsp. of cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1 Tbs. lemon juice
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Prepare pie crust and place crust firmly in pie pan, trimming edges even with the pan.
2. Lightly mix apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and lemon juice in a large bowl. Fill pie crust and put second pie crust over filling to seal.
3. Cut slits in top of crust. Cover edge of crust with strips of foil for the first 25 minutes of baking. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
